ABOUT THIS EPISODE

All Right, what is that? Everybody? Welcome back to tag team, the POKEMON trading card games premier podcasting do. My name is Riley Hulbert, joined by my good friend JW Creewall, and this week we have a special guest with us. John was Stowe, a local player from Ohio who just came off a fantastic finish in Collinsville. Everybody, how we doing today? Doing Great, John. How are you? I'm being pretty good man. I feel they're good. Thanks for having me on. Yeah, of course, this is really an exciting time. We are trying to just invite guests that we know have, you know, either been in the game a long time done something special, and you certainly have fit the bill. So we're very happy to have you here and happy to get it into the interview. I appreciate it. Sounds good. Yeah, so, for those of you who are unaware, this past weekend in Collinsville, Illinois, there was an expanded regional championship. We kind of covered it a little bit this last week, talking about the fear we had of stall decks and all sorts of crazy archetypes that might appear and expanded and low of behold John kind of fulfilled the prophecy and took his piora attacking Hoopa, kind of a little bit of everything, stall deck all the way to top fror finish, bringing home the glass. So before we get deep in the tournament, though, I just want to know like a little bit more about you, John. So you know, how long have you playing Pokemon? Who are you within the game? What's your favorite Pokemon? Maybe? What are the things that we can use to get to know you? Sure, I guess. First and foremost, I ranged from CINCINNATIAI or hometowns, and since I'm moved to Sandusky, so I play and the northern Ohio region, where it's pretty competitive, you know, full grips, just an hour and a half away. There's a lot going on here and I've been playing. My first tournament was in two thousand and six. So I've always been I've always had my foot in the water competitive play, whether it was a pre release, a random national that I decided to go to, a two thousand and eight, I was always I was always interested in the game. Yeah, it's a look, I ated this here and there. You Oh yeah, Oh yeah. But after I graduated from college I decided that, Hey, I've got a little bit of an expendable income. Now I can start getting serious about the game and last year I decided to make my first competitive seasince. grinded out getting two worlds and start playing competitively. Yeah, absolutely, and you're on a pretty good tear this season, John. You have three top sixteen placements. Obviously the most recent was a top for kind of walk us through maybe this year and what has changed from either last year to this year, or what has changed either from the last two years to when you first started getting into the game at in two thousand and six. Right, so in two thousand and six I'm a senior. Dad Still Drive me around a tournaments. I'm getting excited when I pull a random ex card. I'm still getting excited about the holographics that I pulled and you're starting to think about how to put them into your deck. Oh Yeah, Oh, I wasn't even sleeping my stuff back then, are you? Sei? The Dave's change significantly last year. Last year is definitely if there was a bad year to pick to start the crime, it was last year. Five hundred fifty CP, like, what's that was wild. But yeah, I tended to make cups as I could, as many challenges as I could and a few regionals here and there and was able to land it. But this year I started taking more conservative approach. I wasn't sure if I thought the grind was going to be worth it. But at worlds when they announced that it was going to be in London, I got really high sus. That okay. All my friends that I told I was going to quit, they were like generally because I didn't could of course, and I started to put more time into preparation and to looking at the metaphorecasts and to taking the best the best deck for the field. And I've only attended these three regionals, three cups, and I think like nine challenges and I earned points at seven of the nine challenges. Points it to the three cups and pretty successfully in these three regionals and spending more time methodically wondering and asking questions about what people are expecting, what people are going to bring, then acting upon those, I think I've been able to get more banks from my box, so to speak. Sure, during the season, sure, that's cool. That's cool. So, John, what is your favorite pokemon and what is your favorite Pokemon Card? Will start there. Sure, sure, fair. POKEMON has always been s beyond. I know it's kind of Cliche with the evy lutions thing, but just for always really like that pokemon favorite card. That's tough. I like. I think, yeahs be on the x from unseen forces. It's really cool. They go with a yeah, this is a gorgeous car, just from the foil to all the cards, all the x carts from that era. We're just sort of yeah, there's Oh man, but that specific one is just like very captivating and it's like a front. I S Beon binder. So that's awesome and that's that's also the name of your ptcg Oh accounts. Please don't that doesn't need...

...to be. If anyone's watched my story, they'll know that John has quit more than once in a scream game. So yeah, I'm sorry, you're getting called out, Bro you're getting called out. It's funny. This is it is a no Leek's account. They know if he's a Kempis sure. No lakes culture is real and that's funny. Yeah, that's beyond is a classic for sure. I know as beon carried me through Pokemon call cm back in the day. That's what it grow right, go back. Yeah, yeah, I haven't thought about that in a long time. Yeah, well, I'm beyond just didn't do a lot of damage. That's Beion was complete opposite the ton. He's a beefy boy. Yeah, I'm ron his very beefy. He he had some ways did more day ors and ask me on because you would survive more than one hit. So yeah, sure, sure, that's definitely something to consider. So, John, you talk about your you're getting more bang for your buck in terms of going to maybe more of the bigger events and then putting your all into those. What's kind of your favorite part of game in general or going to a regional's? The preparation is is easily the it's still stressful. It's also the most fun because that's when you can see the gears turn. You know, you get a couple guys to focus on one idea and you know, maybe you're you're going grocery shopping, you're pushing the cart and you're thinking about your deck and you're like picking up an apple and you're like, wait a second, what if we cut this card and ated a different card? Or you're at the gym, your mid Curl and you're like wait a second, what if we cut these two cars and had these two cards and set? This happened to me a couple of times throughout my preparation for Knocksville, my preparation for after Collinsville, and I would just either I'd randomly message that one of my testing partners to be like look, what if, and then we test the idea when I when I got home, and it would work out, and that's that's when the validation came as when it's a really good to be playing the game. Sure. Sure, now I have this kind of obsession sometimes and certain formats and with certain decks, of finding the perfect sixty cards. Is that ever something that you adhere to as well? Oh, of course, of course you always want to have what you feel to be the best sixty because, I mean, if you're taking a test and you get ninety eight, I don't know by you guys, but my personal my first impression is where those two points? Where do those go wrong? Yeah, where do I go wrong? So if I'm playing at a tournament and I'm like realizing that one card is dead, I'm just like, well, I might even playing this card. Where did I go wrong? In my preparation. So I always look for that perfect sixty as well. Cool, cool, so you, yeah, speaking of perfect sixty. You know, you obviously brought a very, very strong, solid deck to Collinsville and I think we'll transition over there now. Taka, to us a little bit about the Collinsville Tournament. Just give us like a general overview kind of going into the tournament. What were you expecting and what were the text in your deck that you played to counter the things that you expected to do? Well, okay, yeah, the the top three decks that I had in mind going into the tournament was ultimate Rosma Zashi in V and probably Turbo Dick. I think, within the main three, so Zasking v fantastic for so many reasons. The Ability Doing Two hundred twenty Amis for three energy with metal saucer, I mean unheard of, and with the interprets or ability just cards, complete guess cards, insane for Soho the I check the stud of widow with watch and learn as a way to combat that. I don't want myself to be a complete, solid deck. I think that it needs to have inherit out to different book, one that you can expect. So he got in the heat. He's went in there alternate ACROSMA, obviously being hyped up by you guys other content creators. So I've Smet the dolls deck into the deck to give myself some more time to Faba that double dragon energy away. Sure, and thankfully hit some of those. Those are types. I didn't hit any. Tur About Dark Right? Yeah, Charter seem the kind of the low the colinsile to be on. Yeah, yeah, I think Ben Crier was the one that took it the furthest but didn't correct top eight either. So this could be this could require a renaissance for the turbo dark archetype as a whole moving into Charlotte. Don't know what that'll look like just yet, but yeah, it's it was interesting because at least so for sure. So overall it seems like your expectations kind of aligned with reality. A lot of those decks did did end up populating many of the tables the tournament, not always towards the top, because I think a lot of people had their eyes on those decks, but I'm sure you hit more than one of those of those matchups. Now, obviously,...

...though an expanded tournament, it's really hard to narrow down to just a couple matchups. So what did you do to keep your deck in sync with like the metagame as a whole, given that it's so vast? Yeah, so what I think my deck does well? It's because it's it doesn't commit all the slots, that being a stall deck. I know that they were dollstall players that playing. Are playing the four doll and then the four robos up. I don't play the robot stubs because I don't want to get item lot to oblivion. I don't want to commit those fourth or text to a match up in which they won't be helpful. Instead, put the Sudo Wudo in. I found those extra three slots to be for Pyroor and those single handed me still handily won me the doc in p matchups and there was like an ATP Zassian deck that I played against in pyro or swept. It was fantastic. So I think that having you know you can you can get away with the one of the two of the expanded format because of the your ability to picked up those singular cards in your deck and just having enough of those, despite how they mate might seem like inconsistent. Inconsistencies that surface value can get you all the way? Sure. Absolutely. I'm looking here at the POKMON in your list. You had pyre roar, you had hoop, you had draft rick, Mimic, you with impersonation Sudo woudo watch and learn the durrant, with chip off, buntlebe munch, lacks lugia. Is Your head spinning? I mean you just had a ton of Pokmon here. Was it ever? was there ever a matchup that you had to like maneuver between a bunch of your text that made it particularly difficult? Yeah, so, in specific matchup was actually the atps Asian matchup that I alluded to earlier. He that player was also playing neuvern gx and Brady. We were on the same sixty. He had played that it played him in day one and lost. So we talked after the match and he was like, do I think this is not all loss? You got to balance between Walling, the the GX pokemon and the Zascian and then the the Noi frien could come out of nowhere and the ruin your day. Sure, and I needed to beat this player and then my round fourteen opponents to make it a tough a. that's where it wasn't day too, and so what I went hit. When I hit him, my heart kind of sunk because I was like, how am I going to a new be between these two my pokemon? What I did was I tried to figure out how many noiver he was playing, and when I found out that he was only playing one, the only thing I had in my mind was I got to get rid of the Nigrand, either by milling it, discarding it from his hand, or by killing it. So whether it was targeting the noy that before could have balls, using chip off and praying or Browing, I just prioritize either folk when I was perfect for that situation during the round. Then I eventually won because of that. Sure, sure, did it go to three games? It did go three games. Yeah, I lest game one, but then got lucky off the chip up and game two and he had to heat just started that game three. So cruise. Yeah, wow, cool, cool, very good. So, Collinsville, you know you you had these kind of decks in your mind that you were expecting. What was maybe the most out there deck that you just like had real no, no real game plan for or that kind of caught you by surprise. Oh yeah, Colton in top for his hey growe or egg land's best deck, whatever that was, because I was like, Oh, I didn't know what was going on. That's the cars. It was holy cow. Yeah, if I went back in time and replayed that game with the technoledge that I had in game two, then I feel like it would have been fine. But game one it was just like what are you doing? But get in that deck. Yeah, sure, so, going into going in a day two. What were some of your I don't know, just the matchups that you really enjoyed or likes, particular games that you can remember that you just want to, I don't reminisce about or have have in auto audio lore, you know, forever recorded orally for the masses to hear in the future. All right, immediately, I can just DIS avout round ten, eleven and twelve that were against Trevoure. We're not, no way. They were miserable. Oh Yeah, yeah, that was just tread after tread or travel, he say. I was like you got to be getting me. What Tim doing to me here? Yeah, but my top date match against Andrew Mahone. That's more like dmax matchup. What a ride, what a ride that was. It's crazy. Yeah, talk to us a little bit about it. Yeah, I was thrilled that three high winds made into top. The Me's that Cooper and Andrew. So we're like, Oh, this is great, Ohi I had a fantastic showing, etc. But when I saw that I was playing against Andrew, I was like a man. It would have been cool if we got to beat and top for the...

...finals, but there was the matchup is generally, in my opinion, favored for for my deck, because you have enough dolls you can lost the lost the triple acceleration and move on about your day, no problems. But I had learned that he was playing target whistle and dowsing machine and two special charts. So Andrew was packing. He was ready to go again saw I was like, okay, this is and then this is a matchup where for subs would be. would be helpful, right, but I was obviously stands for subs. In game one I wasn't really doing much of anything for like four or five turns. I'd like two teammates in my hand, I'd like a Giraffrican my active spot and a doll in my on my bench, and that was it. He eventually stingred me and continue to end me into nothing and the game was over. So that felt bad. But game two I was able to set up, get my get my dolls out and, despite he stingering me, I was able to get a really nasty chip up on his hand. There was yeah, it was. It was a stockpiling for a big play and there was just a moment my heart was like, I feel it. I got a chip off right now. So I didn't. You boy into the durant an ounce chip off and discarded surree triple acceleration or t oh, that's no, I mean I felt like an absolute baller. I was like this is the aunt was aunt saved my life, like the ant man was. It was. He was fantastic and at that point he had for triple acceleration in his discard pile because he had he went to kill something else and after he I think he had like an access to a target whistle and like one more special charge. I was able to calculate that if I could just get rid of get rid of any of the pokemon of my discard, or as long as he is always I had enough dolls out, he couldn't win the game Gotcho I was able to take that one from him, but games three was that was another ride. I felt bad because Andrew was drawing incredibly dead for the first few turns. I got all four dollars up and time was called, at which point he's the only one that can take a knockout to win the game, because you're both at six prizes. Right. And before time was called, however, he was forced to bench in execute in order to draw cards, to get some steam. Of A shame. We do our plus three turns and he's got like seven Pokemon. Has Bench with Altaria. So now I can't take a knockout if I want to watch and learn something. If he tries to attack a doll sure, and I'm I you, Steven's resolved, just because I got to find something. I gotta do something and summon through my day. Then let Leo. I see. Literally, I'm like, okay, in a second, you realize an execute pretty each be that. Lely. I witness set, I guessaid with El Color of energy. I picked up a color of synergy. I'm praying to God that I have goose my my deck. Whose was in my deck? I keep my cool. I put the three cards in my hand and then I pray. Do Andrew, do not end me or I will unsubscribe from me Youtube Channel. Not End me once he plays Winona. Once he plays Winona. Yeah, I pray a little harder. Do not have field blower and blow right your egg off the bench, right. You not blow away, and he does not do that either. I drop my card for the turn. I played Letleo down and loose them up to execute. I touched uple color of synergy and I'm in top for that. So you didn't know the let Leo could do that even until the moment it happened. Well, I'm never attacking, so he can retreat for free. He's in the deck. We can retreat for free and and I think it's I think it's better that I played it off kind of oblivious to the the Litleo deck because maybe, whether because because body language is such a heat component to card games, from poker that I think to this maybe I was able to let on the fact that I was clueless, that I was hopeless, and maybe I don't know if Andrew was able to engage that from me or not. I don't know. Did when you made that play, when you made that play. I mean Andrews. You know, Andrews are good. He's a good sport about the share, you know. So when you made that play, did he like? You know, what's he like? Oh Man, I had the feel blower in my hand, like do you have made a counterplay than the one that he did? I think you just said he should have ended. He said he should have been AH, and that was it. Okay, so he just he just didn't know that you could, that you had the capability to take a knockout, and so he just didn't end. Yeah, okay, I mean, Hey, that's that's great. I mean, what were you making when you when you did it? I mean, what were you feeling when you took that knockout and a way that your deck just doesn't win? You won with just what was that feeling of going to top for and like having you further in your chances of winning the tournament? Yeah, I mean it reminded me of why I play the game. I'm a competitor of my heart and being able to dig deep and discover a way to win despite the odds being against me. I mean it's why you plays book on Tragorka and it feels really good and coming out on top despite...

...the circumstances. I mean when working you ask, yeah, that's awesome, you just beat answered Mahone. You're moving on to top for and it's Colton days executive deck. Before you get into how that kind of series went. What were you thinking for that Mashup? What was your game plan? How are you going to approach that? Be Honest, I was that I knew that there was like there's like some blockading involved. There was like energy removal also. Yeah, the right going I did. There was a lot going out and there was there's so much. I was honestly thinking it'd be more of a streamlined egg row deck and thought that I could just run him over with pyroor. Figured out midgame that this was not the route and had to life Redo so many things, and so I had to definitely back put all off that. But I thought maybe if I could keep hi or in my active spot, Munch likes on the bench, you know, recycle fire energy and just scorching thanks to the for the entirety of the seventy five minutes. I'd walk away a thousand dollars more rich. But that that was that. As believed that be the gate. Was not the case, because you removed a lot of energy. Sure, yeah, it did. Said I cannot use supporters. Yeah Right. Talk about a little bit more about the nuance of that game. Game One, I was I was watching from the sidelines. It looked like the lock was pretty heavy hitting game one, but you said that you had new knowledge in game two and you ended up winning game two, I think, pretty aggressively, right, with some aggressive burrows from like turn to so yeah, overall, looking back, let's hit on how the match actually went. But if you could do it over, what were things that you would do differently? The first thing I would have done differently? Well, let me just throw a sclimmer right there. You cannot, when you have mim Q in The act of spot, using impersonation. You cannot use Gladians Lady, and go straight to the discard pile. You can not search your price cards and pick a prize card from your from their correct the supporters died, yes, and he computed of my prize cards was Buntleby in a double colorless energy in game one, and so not having access to those, what's a big blow to my chances. The only reason I didn't scoop. I'll just throw this out there as well. was because he had like a few cards left in deck and in my brain I was like, I don't want to lose this chance to milk exactly. I don't want to lose this. I don't want to burn these forty minutes of game time. If you get so just so few cars left in deck. If I don't see I didn't see his Payton Liza for a little bit. I didn't know if he played Bell Alba or not. So my brain is like, if I can keep manually retreating, shovel them back or put them, keep putting them on top of my deck, list neck search, I might have a chance. But he played be all, but he played at Liza. That's out. Went Right, I would the game. I adjusted my game plan for game two by using supporters with impersonation, just consistently switching between the draft rig, the Buntlebe and the durant's like control this hand. midiled his deck and was able to play my own cards with mimic you. All the while he was doing ten damage, right, and that's what that was. I would have done differently in game one. What was up? So overall, do you think your deck has a fair shot against the matchup? Do you think it's even favored if you go very aggressive with milling? Like it seems like kind of a blowout in game two. That game was over very fast. Yeah, yeah, I think that it's I think that it's slightly pay roll. That's not favorable. So and that's just just it's part of the fun of expanded though, because you can build these wonky decks, these unique decks that no one's ever tested against. Right, right, and I think exactly, and I think that's part of the reason why stall decks might might work, is with deck knowledge and having an idea of what your point is playing, you can move aneuver around there. Out, he prepared for their out. I was never prepared for this guy's outs or this guy's act so I had no round game one. But sure, and that is what is sure. Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely. Well, the congratulations on a fantastic run. Top for is nothing to scoff at, although I'm sure you wanted to see that trevor the finals. I'm sure will have plenty about to say about trevor later, but Gw I believe he has some questions for nope point as well. Oh yes, John, we had just a break up a little bit of this interview. I want to ask you a couple of rapid fire questions. Okay, are you ready? So it's going to be this or that, either or okay, I'm ready to go. All right, ready. Cat or dog, dog, Pepsi or coke? Coke, apple or android apple. All right, winter or summer, summer? Phone call or text. Don't call mullets or mutton chops. Neither nuggies or ten dyes. Oh boy, nuggies, Pokemon, red or Pokemon blue,...

...bloop officer Jenny or nurse Joy Officer Jenny? Onezo Pokemon or one billion lions? Oh, one thousand POKEMON. WHOA? All right, maybe a controversial take, but one thousand POKEMON. All right, interesting, interesting, all right. So now that another we're in your head even more, and you were just alluding to this and talking about this right before. How do you build and succeed with these rogue decks? Like, what is it that draws you to rogue? What is it that draws you specifically in these last, you know, your last few finishes, to stall? What is it about, kind of going off of the beaten path that really draws you in the so I'll take Lucar on the metal, for example. I think that was probably my most creative build in this at least in this format or in this this season. The idea of playing something that people don't don't expect is an inherent advantage already. If you bring something that people don't don't know about, our own familiar with the quote fear of the unknown is enough to either get into a player's head, is to it's enough to frustrate them sometimes, is enough to sometimes make them, making this make a sub optimal play because they aren't sure what you have going on, and I think that's really cool. I think that's part of the reason why Pokemon is so fun. It's because somebody can come out of come out of nowhere with a weird card. I think that the obstacleon deck that took OCS by storm is a great example, despite it being, quote, a meme or something that players disrespected. I forgot his name, but he took it upon himself to to prove people wrong and to like the body so many people and like claps to him brings good. Well, you're in console, exactly right right, and Tim Bartle's Tim. Yep, jealous to Tim. So it's a time for his performance there and I think the allure of I don't really care for the whole social component of being hailed as this rogue guy or whatever, but it's a little cool when people are like Yo, what's what's John Plenner or, better yet, what's Frank Persi playing? What's this Roxy chump saying? What is this you cramerant deck that he's dealt? And I've personally love seeing that guy's that guy's work, because frank's just a mastermind and and how he persons deck building also, and and you'll still looking at his list on limitless death, you'd that's so much going on and that's just that's really cool. Right, that's do it. He's got everything in there. Yes, that's the signature of a frank deck. I feel like it's that's everything. Sure, yeah, yeah, I mean and sometimes it sometimes it works well, sometimes it flops, but I mean when it's got frank versus signature on there, it's at least worth the gander, and that's what kind of draws me to play in those rogue or up the wall decks. Okay, okay. So would you say that you enjoy just having like the I would you say you enjoy the prestige that comes with it at all? I would you enjoy that? The goal of the game, eventually, the ultimately is to win, is to win, but if you can do so with a little bit of Swag, you know, with a little bit of a a little bit of spice, will flare. I mean right or I think that's in putting your own little stamp on on the deck that you created or something like that. Why not? Why not? When I look at the Dallas results and I see rocky Chomp, I'm I will forever think that was frank's deck and I think for frank that's that's something you should be proud of and that's something that he can he can carry as a player for for as many years as he wants to compete with and so I think that's that's pretty cool for sure. I think your fewer full clopchaser, you'd be really cashing in on social media likes, which I don't think you're at all. I'm cool. I'm cool. So not full clop chase. How do you know when to approach like a rogue strategy right. So you come up with all sorts of a little bit off the wall strategies. You know your spandard deck a little less so than Lukarim metal, but I still I still think it was a little non traditional. What to you speaks to a deck being that's the thing you want to test with and work on, because what I find is rogue decks will take a lot more work than established archetype to really get to their potential. So how do you know when you want to dive down that rabbit hole? Thankfully and expanded, it's pretty easy because the card pool is so big and there are a lot of UN there're a lot it's a relatively unexplored format and when new sets come out it just opens the gates. And most pretend going to Toronto this...

...next week, in which I'm not, I probably wouldn't play something cuter rogue simply because there's I don't have a lot of experience with the format right now to I have like barely a week to prepare and just the established arch types, I don't think they have they don't have a whole lot of weaknesses that cars that I see in the card pool can capitalize on. When when the format seems to be played out like it was in Knoxville with with mewtwo Pek Aram abailities are that's when my brain I'm like, okay, because these are the three or four established decks, let me go back in a PTCG out, click on show not owned and start looking for stuff and having the experience from the leak cup that I had the week Brior when I play at the Mel Metal Deck and top for okay, let me let me take this idea, polished up a little bit, throw some other stuff in there and ship it. That's kind of when I think that it's a good time to go for it. Yeah, so it's it almost seems like your philosophy is a little bit different. And Standard and standard, whereas expanded such a wide pool, you can kind of dive in early, whereas standard has a limited pool. So you need a very narrow perspective on the Meta and then you can hone in on that perspective. That sound right, right? Yeah, yeah, and expanded when you can. You can go early because there's it's an unexplored metal and standard sometimes it's better to go a little later when the best decks are fleshed out and people's perceptions of the Meta can very easily be the flipped because you've got the got the ace in the whole, so to speak. Well, and I don't know if you feel this way, John, but for for me, I've been playing for a long time and I've been playing before they even had an expanded format, and so of you, and so I wonder if you feel the same way that I do, where I almost feel that that expanded is the the thinking man's format, where you just have so many cards available to you that that's not that shouldn't be a weight upon you, but that should be a freedom. I love expanded I love more than standard. Holy Cap, breath of fresh air. Yeah, absolutely, and I mean I just I just think that there are so many strategies right that you can that that there are still left out there to uncover. I think it's just a beautiful format. So I agree. And let's not ignore the fact that there are some cards, especially based off the columns fill, that are just that need to be removed right ill, like image, like a gang or may make you, needs to go. I feel like other cards like like execute, might need to go. I think perhaps maybe cards like sky field should leave, but I think that at the end of the day, just the just a mask card pool and the the age of the format, it leaves a lot up to creativity and can leave a lot of room for players to grow in the accessibility issue is is a real thing that I feel like the BBC, I should have, should approach and solve, but at the same time I think it's a I think it's the superior format. That's funny. You kind of let us into our next topic. Jb and I both are fans of expanded but certainly there are some problems that exist in the current expanded format. So we've run a suite in the Post Collinsville world asking what people think of expanded and what they would change if they could, and we got a pretty resounding negativity towards tredy and dust ours deck, especially with the variety of solutions being proposed. I think the main weight main ones we're seeing our melodic and gang are but I've also seen people suggesting a van Shrev. I've seen people banning sky field or egg. You kind of alluded to that. You think gang are mimic you. Is the problem. Is there anything else that you think really speaks to you as being problematic in this format or in this deck, and how would you approach adjusting the expanded format to make it something that's truly enjoyable for everyone? I think that the the supporter rule also helped contribute to the trip to trip or success. I mean when you can't play a supporter car, when you can't play bridget to find your three Zerrua on your first turn, then, yeah, what are you supposed to do? I mean Pablo Lass to the Johnnings Zero Garb in Dallas when the turn one supporter rule still existed. If that, if we took all the decks from from Collinsville kept the turn one support a rule, we would see an increase in zoar play, which would be, in my opinion, a big boon to the trevor and success. But I don't think we'd see nearly as much trevn order in day to ifs arc or other setup decks parely so we're too. We're still to be relevant. I think that it'll be true, given the fact that these trevnar decks have now really started implementing stuff like ardor. I think that for those four guys, Kenny Will Isaiah and Justin like all the power to them, I don't not all...

...the decks were playing. Not all the Trevor Order in the room were playing the CARB. So I would give I would think, hey, they are creative, they solved the matchup preemptively. Go for it. So I think that we can still we can still safely band stuff like like Mimagar because, or at least with the removal of the turn one support a rule, because of the fact that I don't get to play supporter card. Now don't get people any cards and now I have one card in my head. So I think that in of itself is pretty broken too, broken and if you're like okay, as a stall player, I know that I'm not. I'm like purposely not letting my pone of play the game. But it's specifically hurt for what I'd like barely play cards to begin with. So I play like my book adult and like I might play glad. I don't think it's like Glady, and I'm sorry, I might play like a ness father or something, and then I get handlocked and then I lose like all cards but one card in my hand and then I'm just praying. Yeah, well, beach or teammates right, lose a game? Yeah, right, it's rough. It's rough out there for sure. I know it's a lot of people are really frustated by the trevor are deck. Do you think gangars the choice over the melodic, though I see a melodic has really gotten a lot of ire in the past couple days from the community at large. I think just the melodic there. Yeah, I you know, and John You can speak to this, to just the melodic when it was designed, and I think we always kind of look to that with the intent of banning a card in the future. What was it designed to do? A melodic wasn't never designed to go onto these thick, thick pokemon. It was never designed to go on to a pokemon like Trevin and dust. More like, it was never built to you know, it even has the ex clause in it where can't attach to X. So, you know, do you think that melodic would be a good band as well, or maybe in addition to Gangar, mimicure or one or the other? Yeah, I think that my lootic would be a cool band. The like my lootic is a card example of a cart that did not age well sure you know, if it, if it's stuck gx on there, then we would be in a completely different situation. But for a card that's been for some years ago and just doesn't have that, it's obviously being the advantage of and the fact that you can manipulate your prizes with the within the combination with a strainer and specifically degenerate. Yeah as well. I mean some people argue that, but if you don't Dan tres more, they'll find other ways to accelerate psychic energy. I mean that's like to Maxi lictors, and I mean while it's not completely out of the question, you'll, for strevs MOERE DEX play more than six psychic energy. You'll have to like have tread more on your on your bench. I guess it's not the most difficult thing to do or have, but they they can't at without getting up a prize. Precisely, precisely, but just not having the mylotic would force your opponents actually do something, but they had to play like the code back, I guess, bagger again with the ACLUS thing. Yeah, right, I guess it would be a magnaton right, because you could grab a strainer. That seems awful. Not gonna lie. Don't get them any more ideas, don't get them anywhere. Yeah, I might have just accidentally broken the next expanded. That's funny. Well, you know, we'll see, but I think I agree that, trevor, is a problem. Another problem that you called out and I've called out myself, is the accessibility of expanded is getting worse and worse by the year. I mean we're getting to the point where multiple people in day two are having a proxy multiple cards in their deck just because the copies we have left available are all warped. We're thinking particularly of computer search. So we're calling you out quarters, where I've put it cast blast right now, because a problem for sure. But even besides aspects, the accessibility of cards is definitely a problem. How would you go about addressing that? Do you think even cars lea tropical beach deserve a point where they need to be reprinted or remastereds that other players can access them? From a purely business standpoint, it doesn't make any sense for TPCI to reprint these cards and that's not the answer that people want to hear and I don't think that's the answer the players want. But if I'm you know the CEO of the Bookmon Company International, or I'm printing these cards. I don't see why I would want to thank the value of a four hundred dollar card to to five percent of what it's worth right now. Is this doesn't make any sense. To be fair, the company doesn't get those four hundred dollars. Well, yeah, I guess you're right. I guess you're right, but at the same time I think that you want to keep the the allure of those cards high, and I just think would be unfair for those that competed in worlds in two thousand and twelve and two thousand and third, it's just eleven two thousand and twelve, to just immediate, just a just a reprint it. I think that it'd be cool to see like an erata. No, you can't a Rota computer search, but I might see, like I might see there are rotation of those, those that block of cards, raspecs are...

...what's a black and white to legendary treasures. Yeah, I I could see a potential. Yeah, I could see a potential rotation for for that block, but I don't think that I would like that for personally. Yeah, I just don't think that I just don't think that a reprinting would whatever occur. It might be the solution of people want. I know it is just solution of people want. I just don't think it'll happen. Yeah, I don't know about beach continkling. I right, I I could definitely see them reprinting cards. I think actually the opposite. It's good for Pokelon because then they're getting the profits on these cards instead of the secondhand vendors. That being said, though, I don't know. Pretty like I don't think they could reprint traffical beach outside of a world's card. Sure that? I don't think that's just a hard stop. No, I have brought up the idea of like print the same card but have it be different and give it the sycamore role and then you still the prestigious tropical beats. If you want to flex on people, but you give an option to accessible people. That still probably half the value or more, but sure it'd keep it. Well, there's not. I mean they're and there is precedence for the company to release more beaches into the players hands. We have seen that in world's in the past where there were side events where players their hands on tropical beach. That could be another thing where it's not as overt but it's kind of a discreet side event and expanded regionals. That would be insane. Yeah, I mean likely exactly something like that, where you're giving out up, you know, maybe you're not giving out a thousand copies, maybe you're not giving out, you know, even five hundred copies, but maybe you're giving out a hundred more copies of the player base. Maybe just slightly reducing that that, you know, accessibility issue. I don't know what the number is to be to be relevant, but you know what I mean, where it's a little bit more discreet, maybe it's through a side event as opposed to a product that players could buy. So yeah, actually, now that you bring that up, there was a there's a side event at nationals two thousand and fifteen. Yeah, where you could win a number on gold star. Yo. There there was another day you had to plow through like nine or ten people just the best of one. That's of one round, but I think I remember this because I lost my second round by drawing so dead but long, Oh gosh, what's his name? I think it was a long booie or something along this one becose Pine Oh la Let. Yeah, I was in him. I might have been, I don't know, but he ended up on top with the number on gold star. That's all. I was just so jealous. Oh, it is amazing. There was there were other side events for like we use and stuff like that, but I remember that. Yeah, and UPLOADER is like this is the one. That's it. I mentioned rotation as well. I think rotation is a tough thing to balance because I think that black and white cards aren't really that broken, besides a couple of them, for like egg, I think is one of the most broken cards ever, and this just happens to be in black and white. I think XY actually is the highest percentage of problematic cards. You know, we have stuff like the pyro or, we have stuff like sky field, we have Shaymin, we have yes seeker, we have just battle compressor. But Riley, that feels like expanded to me right. That? No, this one, say, is like that's what expanded is. I'm just saying, like rotating black white like doesn't fix expanded. You know, it's you're still have all the cars in our problems. You just lose egg and concert. You know, I'm like Seismantade, right, you would lose those size with toes is x y row, like, Oh yeah, I was just a problem out a garrow that you could do something like like Yu Gi. Oh. Does they have a forbidden, limited and semilimited list that updates every few months? Right? I know that Pokemon doesn't have the energy to put clearly the banning certain cards, but I think that, like if you just like kept, you can kept keep things interesting. But putting like sky field at one, you know, I imagine, imagine the snore storm x just not having access to all for sky field and I think to burn for the one or like having to play. I don't know, I think that'd be interesting. I think we kind of cool, but yeah, I mean we're not. You go for sure. I think there's definitely ways it could. I see like three branching paths to really get expanded to work. What path one? I think it's the best one, and that's too really the heavily monitor the format and keep up with bands in a very rigorous way. Path two is and that could path one could potentially include like a limited list as well. Path too is just get rid of it and say we're done with it because basically it's just an American only format with a little bit of Japanese events and then, like once in a blue moon, one year peer in personal attend to ape ant main tournament. And then path three is to rotate it. But...

I don't really like rotation unless they go past x and Y, because otherwise it's basically the same. But then you just have like sun and moon to sword and shield and that feels goofy like claim. Yeah, I like expanded. I like the breadth of expanded and you know, if any TSPI employee ever listen to this cast, just please don't get rid of expanded. It's so much fun. Yeah, so they have to more liberally like keep an eye on the format. I think we shouldn't have run or happened twice that. I think that's what it yeah, it should be. That's from definitely that's what happens in you gio. I mean they keep their cards all the way back from legends of Blue Eyes, why Dragon, like all those cards are legal. But they monitor the game and I could abby hasn't don't problems. They like if they don't do a great job of it all the time and immediately putting their players in the debt and and stuff like that. But like this, imagine if we just had somebody keeping an eye on on how trevn were just clapped everybody and got everybody upset. I got that. Think that's where they can look at. Sure, absolutely. Yeah, definitely. So I think that covered a lot of the people problems we brought up for expanded. I guess the one other card I think is probably worth mentioning is a lot of people of calling out sham ay x as problematic card. Do you think that's a card that's worth potentially leaving the format? No, no, I think you need to have the both senses of the spectrum, whether your stall or your turbot. Shave many x is a key component of having a turbot like build and if you're going to play Teber like build, part of the part of the consequences of doing so is having a too prize liability on your bench. Yeah, so I think that it's bounced and it has a hundred ten HP. So that is come heate. Shame. It's cool Jimmy's finding me, as long as he's not work. Nine worth ninety dollars, like it wasn't two thousand and fifteen an. He's cool. Sha was actually cool to he's just a nice guy, nice lad. Right, cool. So I think we can head over to like the question answers from chat. If anyone who is currently in chat has anything, feel free to drop it now. GW You see anything, if you scroll up and see anything that you want to particularly call out to start us off, yeah, absolutely well, someone asked and it was answered here in the chat, but you only had three tropical beach in your in your top four list from Collinsville. Can you shed any light on that? Yeah, testing with Hell, look, I'll be completely on. I don't have access to four beach on ptcg Oh and all the testings that I did with three and like a silent lapt for Dallas, it just felt right. So when I translated my testing experience from Dallas to Collinsville, playing with three beach just felt fine. There were times wherein I was where I felt like a fourth beach here would feel like too much. If I when I kept the power plant in initially, it would have just felt like unnecessary. And so not only did I say several hundred dollars in the process like I had the optimalcount of Tropical Beach in my back, sure, and the account of dollars in your pocket. Oh absolutely. So what would have been a maybe sixty one card? Would it have been the fourth beach or would it have been something else? Man, the I'm sure that you went over just you probably you know throughout so many ideas for this. I mean I know of you know our limited testing before Richmond, I think, and just there are so many things that you could fit into the stack. So so walk us through me. Sixty second card. There was a time where I was playing you face clide in the deck as a way to simply have access to get lost on the bench. Rohadots a rhado Tiller and it was a free retreat book one as well, and me it was pretty cool until I was at the gym and Message Brady Button or mid midrap and I was like, munch legs right, like do you think that much lex city better than you, because you can snack search as we retreat anyways, and like it could be disinherently better than you. And so we checked it in and we loved it. So that was that was another card that I was considering that eventually didn't make the cut because of bunch like superiority. Another one was, instead of playing two one pire or I was thinking about playing one one pire or one did a prison star and then make them pay Persian, because make a bay, make them pay. Version. Can just you get that off? One against a guy that's just been stopped calling his hand? Yep, for a few turns and then he's got nothing. Yep. So I think that was but that initially hit the chopping block because we're like, what if we just roll the dice with Durant and just how? I was going to say right, right, and you hope you hit enough resources that it can work, because obviously durant is is a little bit more of a budget Persian where it's random. It's down to four cards, but it's random, whereas persions you get to select and he, you know, person can obviously you know is a better car, but the cost...

...of getting into play is a little bit tougher there. So I feel like in the end, yeah, probably Duran just fulfilled all your needs in and gave you one more card slot to work with. Yep, exactly. Cool. Anything that? Anything that you want to say about the standard format? How are you feeling? Are you playing planning to play anymore pokemon here and then in the upcoming month or so and like my my next event, guaranteed, big one I should say, is probably going to be four way and that's not until May. Yeah, so, like right now I'm just trying to get my life together. We're just gonna I'm looking at the inner format. I'm thinking ATPEC. Seems like the best are in large. I'm hoping that the whenever happens in Malmo or in Toronto shakes things up a little bit, because I'm looking at this format and I'm just thinking this was like boring stuff. So if he's action, will the job swerd? It's like like just the like if you you can acceler energy with action, which is cool, but having too hard attach to energy, to ATP and just praying that it doesn't get disrupted or like one thing I was kind of frame storming in my head. It was like what if I played like wait and see Hammers, like the Quran and like some a called and drum home, maybe some order pat I think that be kind of spicy, kind of cool, kind of fun, but I mean at the same time, if you don't find the wait and see Hammer, you just get bodied and then you just wasted you know, whatever the cost of iministration was and you have to go home. So we're we're just trying to be fiscally responsible for the next few months until we're wayne rolls around and hope it. I think that's when rebel correct clash had come out breck. I think it's the first night or I so I'm looking forward to when that comes out because there seems to be some pretty interesting cards in there that I'm ready to explore. And that'll be a new format. So I think there'll be a time when for vats on the chaos exactly to get there started and too come up something cool for that tournament. Very Cool Jesse, asking and chat. Do you think we'll see similar results in Charlotte with Trevor Nore being the most of day to or do you think people will figure it out and see's less success, obviously assuming they don't do any sort of emergency panning right. I mean at this point looks like tpc eire and leave at the whole coronavirus thing going on. So there were considered about canceling the U, I see, and streaming about low that is hey, you gotta you gotta do what you gotta do, but I think safety first. Again. Oh yeah, of course, of course we want to make sure that we're alive for for any I see four worlds, hopefully. But Dude, a hundred thousand cases globally. Yeahs tract a hunds crazy. That's it's why I but in turn back on topic, I think that we can expect a lot of people just going brain dead, copying the same sixty going in with Trev more. But those that have the time to bounce from Toronto to Charlotte to maybe fix up their turboard oark list, I don't think that that matchup is good for turboar dark, even unless they have a an amazing first turn. But I don't know. Who knows? I'd be I'm writing an article. It'll be published in a few days. I wouldn't mind going back with a similar sixty, stall sixty for that tournament. I will not be attending, but saying WHO's there won't be any bands. Where is there's likely not going to be any bands. I'd predict this. ALARMTA, is anything that you could do install to help improve it versus trevor more, I think that you have to go second. That's first and foremost. You have to go second. You can attend, you can't. Maybe a fourth beach would be good. Maybe you just spend the money and do it. You have to have you have to give yourself enough opportunate end up turns to draw out of it. I think Adler did a really good job with his while stall deck by being really heads up and playing Reggie Giggis. A hundred HP means that Trevornoor is not going through and wall hit still give you another turn to open break. So that's that's, unfortunately, roughute you have to take when you're going to that deck, and I think a Reggie Gegas is heat up, so I would probably teck in one of those and swap that out for the birds. The birds were they were, they were okay, but I think they they would have been better with it I had the Reggie Gegas instead, and I think that you can play. I think you can play another counter catcher perhaps, or maybe even going the fourth sub route might be right, might be worth but I don't know. I don't know. I'M NOT gonna be sessing to that format. I'll keep an eye on it for sure, but I'M gonna be chilling for a little bit, for sure. Cool for sure. Yea Cool I think think we've about covered everything it. I had you. Have you have any other questions you want to ask? John? Well, John, I just want to say you know,...
