3-39. Chilling Takes

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

The boys dive into Chilling Reign ahead of a prerelease weekend! Come and join in the fun and excitement of a new set on the horizon!

What is up guys? I'll go back to tag team, to POKEMON trading card games. Premiere podcasting duo. My name is Riley Hobart, joined, as always, buy my fantastic friend Mr JW curry. Wall it W. How's it going today? It's going pretty well, Riley. How are you? I don't know. Why did I say like that? I think I was so I was like mid change of what I was saying, or so what I want to say. I hate. I was like it's as like it's it was good that. I was like it wasn't really the heck, like I'm not feeling too great right now. I don't know, it's it's definitely not a high point, you know, my life right now. Not that, not that there's not a lack of excitement, but I don't know, I'm just feeling like in a little funk, you know. I feel. Yeah, yeah, it's kind of like one of those moments where you're to say like, you know, how's it going, but you switch it up to like like how's it hanging or something, or something. Yes, what's yes, something like that. Maybe it's just the maybe it's just the dopamine kind of getting out of my system from the weekend. Yeah, until then. Now the audience. A weekend. Yeah, well, I was over hanging out with Andrew Mahone and some other local Ohio friends. And Yeah, we just had like a little cook out, grilled for hung out, did the did the things that would, played some lawn sports and you're almost pulled the Hammy. Who won the two the two hand touch football team, Beta, Beta. Yeah, it's EAMILFA. We well, we had the the Star Wide Receiver, Andrew, go out with a with a strained muscle. He thought he was gonna pull a Hammy. So that was that was a crushing blow to our chances. But you know, we well, I'm proud of our guys. You know, they really worked hard and they they left it all on the field and we only lost by one touchdown. So I'd say, all in all, great effort. You love. You love to lose the great effort. That's right. That's right. We played some Spike Ball, all right, all right, which of which I went undefeated. If you guys ever want to play spike ball, we like ever have a nationals or world's again, I'll want to play spike ball. I'm there, man. I love that game. If we ever have a nationals again. Yeah, if we ever do, you're all invited to my place, my new house, which, if you're listening on Thursday after eleven am eastern time, I will have purchased and so you can, you can come over and we can we can spike ball in the backyard. There you go. What kind of yard you're rocking with the house? Who? I mean, it's a it's a nice yard. I mean it's like sizeable and it's flat,...

...which is really important. You know, you can get haply in there. You got a little deck, you know, you got a little grill. I think that the owners are leaving us. And then the back is yeah, I mean it's big enough, certainly for a trampoline. So you know. So it's a nice when it's a little fenced into so you don't to worry about like the street or the neighbors or anything, although we didn't meet our neighbor the other day. Shane is very nice. Shane Awesome. Yeah, yeah, so what's new in in your world, Riley? Um, not a lot. I travel started back up for work, so like between transit right now. Actually staying home from now until the end of next week. I have to track. Yeah, at a trip last week. So what going on? Like a lot of moving around. Yeah, my friend is actually on the trip. I'm watching her hats, the light Yar any like crashing during the podcast? That that is a likely the source. Yeah, but yeah, it's going well. Definitely a lot going on, but it was a it's kind of Nice to start to get back in the normal swing thing. A lot clients and mask mandate was Addistan M so I still wore mine out. I'm fully vaccinated. I still wore my now just that. I guess that a habit. And I went to the grocery store and, like a ton of youple to know, Mass on. Kind of weird to see, but it was cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah, nature is healing, it sure is. Yeah, you know, not nothing too crazy, but life carries on. Yeah, that's good stuff, man. I think I don't, you know, speak for just myself when I say I know can't wait to return to normal life or or, you know, some semblance of normal life. I'm a little hesitant, as I think a lot in our immediate sphere are that kind of a such a laxidaisical approach. But you know, I think generally it's good for people's well beings. Yeah, and, you know, to socialize again. And you know, there's like a mental inertia, I think, for yeah, for a lot of folks really, if they're vaccinated and you know, their local groups are, it's a little tough just to move that space where, you know, we sent a hold here, basically living our alone, really Argentine, if I spatial. It's tough to just like immediate back and yeah, absolutely lots...

...of other folks who aren't ass it. So I don't fault anyone for, you know, taking it slow and steady, but I am excited. I see like, Yep, I area. It's gonna be fun. You can be fun. Perfect transition. We're looking at some fun new stuff. Crazy card game, the pre release for chilling and it starting on Friday. W The do you know you how excited are you for chilling rain? I'm stoked, man. Yeah, it's always good on a new said drops. You know, I want to be there on kind of the for front of like trying to figure out, you know, at the very least, like cool little combos, which of course there are a lot of, but also kind of trying to develop the the predominant ways to play the top tier archetype. So I'm really staked about it. There's a lot of potential. I think this is going to be really good, said in terms of introducing a number of archetypes that maybe aren't particularly powerful but like fit in, you know, fit in with Meta game. I don't think that anything is going to kind of dominate or take over, although it might, but I just don't quite foresee that. But I see a lot of balance coming, I see a lot of unique an interesting combos coming and a lot of the V pokemon are pretty exciting. Yeah, absolutely, a chilling rain is going to im as every and I do think. Well, I don't think you can say the same about like vivid voltage, though like that. That's talked enough about. Vivid volted voltage was for for all. I Guess Volta doesn't for us. The amount of time, the amount of time that it breathes life into changes, right. So like with vivid voltage, you'd probably say that it was fresh for a week, all right, like darkness ablaze is maybe fresh for months. So so we're open that. That chilling rain, you know it's fresh for a year. You know, that seems like a stretch, but there's certainly a lot of cool things that are coming out. Yeah, regardless, I think there's life to be found the archetypes that are emerging and existing archetype will find some tools or some news for around. So, with pre released on the horizon, make sure that have a local or, if you are that okay, like locals. It's always a lot of fun if you can do like some sort of virtual pre release. Even I know like that. HMM, I recommend you part tea. It's fun to get often this kind of stuff. Yep, and I've seen some pretty cheap pre releases.

Like I saw one that was twenty five, I think, and you got the building battle kit and three packs. So that's I don't know what, nine packs or something for dred and twenty five like that seemed pretty strong for a pre release. So certainly be on the lookout. And they were doing you know, they were shipping to write. So like for an extra two or three bucks you can get a chipped to your house. So like yeah, that's that seems pretty good. Beyond a look out for those kinds of deals. Yeah, I I kind of want to get like a building battle kid or too we have a friend over after that. Yo, that'd be sweet. But I'm curious, like from chilling range you one, are the things that you're most excited about? One? Maybe? One? Two, two ards that have jumped out at you you're really excited to get your hands. Yeah, U, I'm. I'm pretty excited to see, like, like my kind of the card that I'm most interested in is, and maybe that not not for like a like an attacking standpoint, but just as a card in general, that I'm just really interested to see how it kind of slots in, if it has a prominent spot index or if it just sees like no play. Is the glaring Articuno V. Obviously the attack is not it's not bad. It's not particularly something to write home to mom about, but there the reconstitutability, there the where you discard to you draw one. I think it's really cool. Not something that we've seen in a basic before and combos pretty decently with something like Cricketun r like. I could easily see kind of some draw and Chin made around articuno and Crickettun or just having Articuno by itself. Now the draw to or discard to draw one is that enough of a drawback for decks to not play the Articuno? Do you know? Would people say, Hey, we already have something, maybe arguably a little bit better in the form of or anger room? I don't know. But but sometimes that discarding effect is is really important. So, yeah, I'm really interested to see how that deck, or how that card, I should say it, hits decks. Yeah, and I'll be curious as well. Like you know, I think artic you will benefit versus Rangeru. If there's, if there's decks that really like to have stuff in their discard pile, you'd your water decks will have right, just car pile, right, given the bloody yeah, M Melanie, Melani there, Melanie supporter, being excited from the discard pile. You know me, can know, is the way that you get them there. You know, I think there's some potential there. Are there any others that have really jumped out of you? Well, I I mean besides the obvious, right, like you have. You'll probably say blissy, so I don't want to steal your thunder on that guy.

But you know, besides the besides the obvious, Caloris is like I'm looking at and Zeroora to I mean I think that one's another pretty obvious one. Hundred Sixty Snipe is pretty ridiculous. But the the Cellaby v Max, I think has some serious it's at least drawing some serious interest for me because there's so much you can do with that. So the attack does a hundred thirty for two energy. It's got an ability to lets you heal twenty damage each year grass pokemon. So there's some kind of like, you know, potential there with just being able to heal a ton of damage from your cellabies if you're not taking weakness, weakness damage to the fire and you get to search up to to Pokemon from your deck. So the idea of there would just be you play it with maybe a bunch of support Pokemon, like maybe you're playing it with but I'll plume gx that also heals. Maybe you're playing it with, you know, violum gx and the other vio plume that does status conditions on a flip. That could be kind of cool. Maybe you're playing it with other, I don't know, stage two's, you know, something like dusk or for instance, just to disrupt your opponent a little bit. I don't know. There's there's a few different ways. I feel like the card can go, and just that searching cards every single turn, certainly you can find some kind of combination of Pokemon that you could put into your deck. That's that's supplement the Cell Bey idea. That give you a little bit of boost, I guess your opponent. Yeah, the healing for us to build be cool. Yeah, we're saying obviously on my end, I do like the Bliez actually talked a lot about the bussy. We did episode a go. I recommend listening to that if you want to hear US rant about how much we enjoy bliss. See another card that I want to shout out here, and this is another obvious but path to the peak. I think it is a card and I can just see there being some really crazy combos coming out with this card. Now we I could see like x me, for example, abusing card and buying some tricky strategies x and I just generally I like having some form of disruption. I will say this, post chaotics fall rotating, this seems a little powerful. I guess we're going to lose cassule and our shadow, so I'm hoping that we make more powerful. See kind of like Outer Act. That almost but nevertheless it's still super and also, I do want to shoutout I like fog crystal a lot. I think that's a really hard yeah, I can see. Yeah, I love cards that have like versutilt fact, obviously the net fall, and I think that was also a really, really good card though. Yeah, of course, of course. Yeah, the psychic archetypes are really getting that boost, which...

...is nice and it's also really nice. And just want to point out that. You know, if you look at potentially the shifting kind of rock paper scissors or the format, it's not quite so rock paper scissors with the new cards, right, because you got the you know, Art Kuno, the Calie Ricks, psychic week too dark, right. So you know that archetype kind of falling to a turn. It is, but you know, you also have the Zaptos coming out, which could potentially attack for one energy and really kind of put that hurt on the eternity. So like our rock paper scissors format is shifting a little bit, but maybe not in you know, it's not shifting in a way like we're getting psychic, all this potential, but it's not just that. Okay, I had to play a mirror deck to be able to beat psychic, like it maybe wasn't the fat past right, like I had to play another mew two deck or another meat mew deck or another mewtwo ex deck in order to beat those Mea two decks, because, you know, psychic just is a week to psychic. Know, we have finally a little bit more balance in terms of what we're seeing with weaknesses, which I think it's going to be really refreshing. They finally refined kind of this triangle of weakness or, I guess, rock paper scissors, lizard spot, etc. Etc. To to make it so that, you know, there's not one on kind of hard counter to these decks. So I like that a lot. What I will say, though, is cards like the Calix for fighting resistance. Then if the hards like Hercy food, brutal? Yeah, yeah, it's definitely brutal. I mean, you think about things that that they could tech in their decks. I mean we u still have weakness Card Energy, which not a great choice, you know, considering that you know the first attack is for that fighting energy on that rabbit strikers food, but I'm still an option, certainly not the worst card that you could play in the deck. But yeah, like you said, certainly that's gonna be kind of frustrating at first lost we have the the golden blacks nominal and wait to roll up in first real life event and the dry player starts their Golden Star Line. Yeah, I hear you. Yeah, I just got a couple of products in the mail from Pokemon. So I got my booster box and and trainer kit, or the the elite trainer box. So I'm going to be open in those over the weekend sometimes. So I'm really looking forward to that too. Yeah, maybe a lot of fun. I just want I want one of the alternate birds. I want the Goalerian Articu Nov alternate. That's that's my life like. If the that happens. Everything else is cool, you know. It's got the weird it's kind of like...

...swooping backwards and he's got the little rat or the braviary basic. What's that one? Rufflet, rough flet? I was trying to I was like, Rowlett, that's not correct. Yeah, right, that sounds about right. It's got the little roughlet in the side. It looks very cool in my humble opinion. afters. Well, see, the older I get the more I care about that. Like I'm now starting to realize like, Oh, it'd be it'd be awesome to have a fully revd out or fully gold deck, which is just never something. I used to like the RABS or. I'm not a huge fan of revs now, but I do like the alternative, a foil pattern on alternate arts very, very night yeah, I thought the revs were always more beautiful when they were the sheer or like the straight reverse. For me, I like that more because I really like Ras a lot. I just kind of don't you playing, Bro but I do. You think that like all the so sick? Yeah, well, ours, you're cool. All tarts are fainly. Yeah, definitely, definitely. They always said a lot, but they've really stepped it up in terms of the star work. I feel like like there're a lot more cards are and they cards have always kind of told these stories, but it's like more inchcuate stories, I don't know, more interesting stories. Maybe I don't know what it is, but you like it. There's definitely like a noticeable quality in or maybe they're just experimenting more. Maybe that's it. Like I just noticed that these cards with the car a lot more unique styles to them. For the altars, I think they're using the altars. Yeah, I kind of like really experiment, but like they're giving more freedom to the artist and, if you have, their own interpretation of so I do want to talk more about where we expect us to go with chilling rate. Architects. You Mate Update or archetypes that you want to explore from chilling right and how you might build those preliminarily or that though, that faithful time today. Let's hear it. Riley, you were you were telling me before the cast that you didn't think that I was going to get your card of the day based on the Polka Xcentry. I don't think you will, and in fact I'm willing put a hundred dollars down. So way you're willing to do like, if I get it, you'll pay me a hundred dollars. What happens if I don't? Won't get it. Okay, great, that sounds like a steel and also, like I just just want to say there, you know, we're saying, okay, there's nine hundred something pokemon. We could probably whittle that down...

...by like three hundred right, because, like you know, if you say something about water or something. They clearly know it's not going to be any fire. But you know what I mean. It's like for some pretty obvious ones out there. So all right, let's here. Okay, it's powerful muscles allow it to move at a speed that belies. It's that feels like there should be a second sentence. Powerful muscles bulies. It's bulk allow speed that blot at a speed that blies. It's bulk. I mean the Cheez. That's a tough one because like the obvious is going to be like my champ right, like you just be like, Oh, yeah, what you muscles? You know, the muscles pokemon. Boom, a champ. There's probably a little trickier than that, because I don't know that I would necessarily consider my champ bulky. Okay, I would say, is it Hari Yama? Honestly, that's a good guess. But no, Dang, it's it's for alligator. Bang. Oh Man, that's that's a sentry. Look does not invoke for alligator to me. Know it does not. That's poke about trick this man. So that's nasty. Today is the ADHP wonder. That is arc for alligator. So back in the day when they would make these dark pokemon. Dark F alligator was one of the very first and it's got a really cool ability called scare. It's a great name. And so as long as dark alligators active, your opponents baby pokemon can't use their baby powers and they can't tack and they can't have abilities working. It's a it's pretty cool. So it's the CLEFA Disabler, ello kid disabler and it does fifty damage for three energy and discard some energy if you attack with it. So basically like a lockdown deck, you'd play it with dark file plume. Kind of get the file plume from Ancient Origins Item Lock and then you lock their babies and all the sudden, like all the setup of the neo daxi is kind of shut down. And the reason that I thought of Dark Fraligas we actually is I kind of wanted to do entry on like baby pokemon card and on or Ube that you all played this weekend, and then I realized if you way more fun to talk about something eat the pokemon. U. MM SO FROLLI gator scares the babies of for alligators. Definitely definitely that boy that...

...does that boy impressively. Low hit points, though, for a stage two crazy. I mean it's amazing that that they were ever printed. I guess it kind of makes sense canonically, right, because the dark like pokemon are like technically maybe stronger, but they have less hps, and that kind of how they they are really earn then into dark pokmon. But I think that's the idea. Yeah, like you're acrificing your health or power. All right, yeah, eighty HP ADHP insane stuff. Well, great card of the day, Riley. Yeah, let's say. Let's continue down that. So Dark F alligator has time to talk about cards. So chilling rain talked about a bunch of card as that interest is the first archive looking to build with chilling rain. You can incat existing one or a new one. Sure, yeah, and I'm would this is not that. Yeah, yeah, this is not going to come as any surprise to anyone, but I really like that. Chad a write rider callie x vmax. You know you're going to do more damage based on the amount of energy that are in play, and you get to attach energy and draw cards. I don't think the abilities particularly good. It should help, certainly right in terms of drawing cards, in terms of attaching energy, but but you're really looking at that kind of attack doing a bunch of damage for a bunch of energy on the field, like that's really cool. I think, you know, the very obvious way to play that would be to just go, you know, for for you have a bunch of support. You may be throwing like three to four Chris Clia that maybe you have, you know, some zigzagons, you're doing some pink damage. You know, build it a lot like something like sent to scorch right, where you have all these things then and then it's maybe even a little bit better than set to Scorch in the fact that you can just accelerate energy onto yourself and draw. So you know, there's that. So probably something like that. That would be where I would initially go. You know, maybe you have some GRACI's in there as well. You know whatever, but there might be some ways you can go with that that are a little outside of the box. Of One of the ways that I was thinking of for the shadow Rader, Cali rex is to kind of play into the high HP and lack of dark type attackers potentially. Right we're thinking about the GALLERIAN Z APP those coming out that that might not guaranteed, but might make a turn. It is less of a play air choice, and so there's not going to be a ton that can one shot the calarics vmax in one hit. So you could play it with something like Gangar. There's a gangard or in sword and shield that allows you to move damage counters from one psychild Pokemon...

...to another psychic pokemon. So you could potentially get out of gang are and move all damage from your active Calie rex to a bench calie rex. You know, you can make funky plays where you could knock out pokemon and then reset stamp your opponent or something like that. You know, there are some things that you can do with gang are, just like you could have done in the past with reuniclist. You remember that card Riley, and so that's one way that I would think out of the box. You know, dark is down. So what's really one shouting you right now? You know, maybe like Blis Cephalon. You know, maybe we'll cephalon like maybe we'll ceplon. I don't know, sent the Scorch, I guess not really a ton right. So you can lean into that health, you can lean into that good weakness and maybe get a gang are up and going and be able to win kind of the mirror matches or other tight matches where healing would really be beneficial. Yeah, those are some ideas. I do like the idea of like our are roll kind of Oh yeah, yeah, you can do some Cheryls. That'd be sweet to Um, pretty cool from my perspective. One thing I don't really and it makes me want to build. It's seen a lot of like Japanese results with ice freader Calie REX. Like I don't totally understand how it's good enough. So I kind of want to like experiment with that and like maybe I'm just complete powerful like the next lamp. Yeah, although I have a lot of it's the counteract. The one thing I'm really really looking forward to building, though, is dark box, the GALERIAN Moltaris. If you watch the champions, you can Japan. You saw the credible game where a dark box player gets I think it turned to red or what is it called Dark Moon Gx, the full effect and then turn three they get the tyranna Tur gx is for three more prizes and it was just insane and I love that kind of stuff. I Love Dark Boxy X. I I always have yeah, I'm just so excited to slam down a glory multuous player red and blue and yeah, and get some crazy stuff going. That sounds is so fun to me. Yeah, yeah, that's that's pretty epic. Yeah, I didn't see that game, but I do remember you'd, I think, you talking about it to my did on the cast as well. Yeah, yeah, exactly. It was such a good game, so entertaining. Yeah, nobody, I don't think is opponent, had any idea what was coming. Well, it's I mean it's pretty cool. We already...

...have a ton of decks right now, like there are just, you know, I would say upwards of fifteen to maybe twenty. Twenty might be a little high, but there's somewhere around that. Fifteen the just the amount of decks that anyone could play and like reasonably expect to do well. So we're going to add in a handful of more archetypes from this set, no doubt, which is very, very cool, very exciting and very interesting to say the least. Yeah, so fun. So I'm really looking forward to some of these cards, especially have multips for it. There's other water stuff that's coming out. Unfortunately, a mad partyers across the world are hearing the spirit tomb. If you have a bad party matchup, your time is yes, yes, which be a good one. That's far. Tomb is like so laser focused and its purpose it's actually insane. Yeah, that's pretty much in no use. Parady, yeah, that would almost argue that, like the arachoreo is better in a lot of matchups because you don't want to shuffle in the bunk Wyre. Sure, sure, only against the night arches in the parties actually pull them back. So that's kind of funny. But I think we're going to play. Are there any other like cool new ideas that you got Bruin right now? Um, I mean the you know, the the what's that ATP with the Horn? Yeah, yeah, I mean certainly that will be something that just kind of is there and we'll have to deal with and probably makes that archetype just significantly better, because now not only is your hand not safe with the mall, while your discard pilot is neither. So so you know that for sure is going to be something that that'll affect things. But I also think, like man, I am really looking forward to seeing how some of these single strike and rap strike pokmon incorporate themselves in the deck, particularly that's areo or. I mean I think that attack is just insane. It can chain really well. Yeah, just doing a hundred sixty. You know, you're doing a hundred damage the active and then you're doing on a hundred sixty of the bench. A hundred sixty of the bench is enough to you know, obviously two shot most things out there. So you know, I certainly would look at that car and say, well, you know, you you would think if that archetype becomes big, like maybe a fan of waves or hammers or, you know, on the rise or something. I'm interested to see how people play that deck and what they play with that. You could do something like electrode. Electro can knock itself out and...

...accelerate a couple energy from the deck onto an electric pokemon. So maybe that's something. Maybe you're just using Bolton to accelerate a munch energy, but however you're doing it, that seems like a like a very cool just card. Really interested to you how people break that one. There's a lot of danger from mine that live on the bench. Yes, in reason tzg street. Yes, yes, well, I think spread archetypes are generally you know, well liked, and bring more strategy to the game. I would say right. If you're if you're not swinging at things for one shots, but you're doing that kind of spread damage and you're putting your opponent in potential positions to be knocked out but they still have the opportunity to heal themselves, I think that's pretty healthy. You know, I think that's that's generally going to lead to, you know, a healthier format. So I I like that, man, I like that a lot. Yeah, I always mostly I'm kind of like leaning into Oh yeah, I'm you. Who's going to be a fare? Yeah, sure. You know, people are already playing so much mew, with the dust rapid strike being the main right, and you have now you have nice rider, which basically thing coming. So true, not a safe time to be. Pour one out for the day's any other like initial impressions I have on now, I'm stoked to get these cards in my hand. Man, it's of the car of me, I know, I know, pickup card, put card down.
